Lilo and Stitch Read Along Available Format: |
The DVD read-along version of Lilo & Stitch grabs attention with almost too many cool features to collapse into a manageable bite. For starters, you'll need to find your way around a screenful of flags. Feeling unambitious? Listen and read along with the English narration, featuring the original movie voices of Ving Rhames and Tia Carrera. Up for a challenge? Flex your foreign-language muscles with the Spanish, French, German, or Italian versions. Then you're free to follow a condensed account of the spunky Hawaiian orphan girl who unknowingly adopts an alien. Future MTV addicts will want to skip forward to the music videos (the A*Teens' "Can't Help Falling in Love" and a children's chorus rendition of "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride"), while gamers will go for the feature that reinvents the remote as a joystick. The song section parades lyrics along the screen (take your pick of languages), and the vocabulary area allows for slipping in and out of foreign tongues while learning words like "ohana" (family). Two other options, "Search the Web" and "The Magical World of Disney," aren't much more than commercials, but if you like movie trailers, click away. Lilo represents a new, bookletless breed of read-along, but, for technophobes, it's comforting to know that its volcano of options isn't about to blow. Sparing yourself a DVD lava bath of bells and whistles is as simple as sidestepping a flag or two.

The Lion King Read Along Available Format: |
Anybody who struts around with Simba's hard-won authority deserves this royal DVD read-along from Disney. Kids can recoil at Uncle Scar's dastardly deeds en español and discover that "hakuna matata" sounds pretty much the same in Spanish, French, Italian, or German. And should the dynamic storytelling fail to thrill your 4- to 12-year-old fan, a flurry of other interactive options await. Toggle to "Songs" for sing-along renditions of movie hits, including "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," and on to "Music Videos," where Elton John roars soundtrack favorites "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M groove to "Hakuna Matata." The "Vocabulary" feature allows for see-and-say mastery of a list of wildlife, while the "Game" section allows players to match paw and hoof prints to the proper beast and reassemble the scattered skeletal remains of an elephant. Original cast voices are featured, and grownups will be pleased by the package's reading component.

The Little Mermaid Read Along Available Format: |
This read-along presentation of Little Mermaid is designed as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, Disney's full-length feature film. The read-along section features a 14-minute narrated synopsis of the basic story in five languages; each with onscreen words accompanied by still action pictures from the Disney movie and very brief song excerpts. The vocabulary portion introduces words like "mermaid" and "crab" in English, German, French, Italian, or Spanish. Sing-along songs with onscreen lyrics include "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Children ages 3 and older will enjoy pursuing Sebastian as he hides beneath ever-moving cups in the game section. Music videos "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World" (featuring Jodi Benson) are sure to appeal to preteen audiences and the Search the Web DVD-ROM and Disney preview sections are of interest to all ages. While the Little Mermaid story is scant on drama in this format, this read-along makes reading fun and constitutes a nice accompaniment to the feature film.

Tarzan Read Along is a fantastic thing for the kids and adults. It has the complete story of the Robert Louis Stevenson story of Tarzan with all the character voices and a great narration by actor Roy Doltrice (TV's Beauty & The beast) It has the entire original cast too. The voices and Sound effects are great. It's a reading tool too for kid! The menus are cleverly put together and the graphics are fun. The extras include music videos with sing-a-long capabilities and words as well. There is a game that you can find Tarzan and friends and a vocabulary section that everyone can learn foreign words. There are even two rock videos You'll Be In My Heart and Strangers Like Me. You can hear and see Phil Collins too. That is very good. The best part for the kids and me is the fact you can listen to this story in six different languages. A very cool feature I wish I had as a kid. Our kids today are going to be smart in several different languages. You should get this. It's fun and musical! |
Toy Story 2 Read Along Available Format: |
For kids who can't get enough of the Toy Story phenomenon, Disney offers this read-along DVD as an educational companion to the popular sequel. It doesn't serve as a replacement for the full-length feature, however--the story is boiled down to a more manageable 16 minutes. Stills are accompanied by dialogue from the movie, voiced by the original actors, plus narration by Steven Weber (Wings). Words appear along the bottom of the screen in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Three musical numbers are represented the same way so children can sing along to "You've Got a Friend in Me," "When She Loved Me," and "Woody's Roundup." Riders in the Sky's video for "Woody's Roundup" is also included, along with 20 vocabulary words (accompanied by pictures), a magic puzzle, and interactive content.

Treasure Planet Read Along Available Format: |
This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive).
