Walt Disney Treasures - Chronological Donald Format: DVD |
Available December 2003. Pre-Order now through Amazon.com before the supply is exhausted. It was 1934 when the irascible Donald Duck came to life in a teeny bit of a part in "The Wise Little Hen" and proceeded to steal the show. From that point on nobody could hold him back, and the much loved cranky character went on to be the most prolific of Walt's "fabulous five." Now for the first time, you can enjoy the Donald in all of his solo starring shorts from "Donald And Pluto" in 1936 to "Chef Donald" in 1941. This volume also includes a loving tribute to the man who achieved immortality by inventing the voice of Donald Duck -- and performing as his alter ego for 50 years -- Clarence "Ducky" Nash. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come. . |
Here's Donald (1991) Format: VHS |
Yes, there are classic Disney cartoons featuring Donald Duck on this video, but the problem is that there are just three of them running a grand total of 22 minutes. "Here's Donald!" is Volume 2 in the Dinsey Cartoon Classics series and here is what you get: (1) "Wide Open Spaces" (1947) finds cheapskate Donald unwilling to pay for a hotel room. So, instead, he spends the night out in the great outdoors dealing with an air mattress, a boulder, and other headaches; (2) "Crazy with the Heat" (1947) has Donald and Goofy stuck in the desert when their car breaks down. As they walk across the hot burning sand they start seeing things they are not really there (or are they?); and (3) "Donald's Ostrich" (1937), which was the third Donald Duck cartoon, find our hero having to deal with Hortense, the Ostrich, who tends to eat everything in sight, whether it is food or not. This cartoon was written by the great Carl Barks, who went out to write and draw the classic Scrooge McDuck comic book stories, so I have a special fondness for that particular cartoon. All three of these cartoons are more than decent example of the world's most irascible duck in action, but given how little is here you want to make sure you pick this one up for only a couple of bucks to get your money's worth.

Starring Donald & Daisy (1991) Format: VHS |
A wondrous collection of cartoon masterpieces from Disney. Each volume in this fabulous series is filled with the kind of joy and laughter that have made these cartoons timeless. Yours to enjoy now ... and forever. Donald's fiery "wisequacks" are often tempered by his one true love: Daisy Duck. Join Donald and Daisy in these three hilarious cartoons. "Don Donald": Daisy Duck makes her screen debut as Donna Duck, a pretty Spanish senorita who sets Donald's heart a-flutter! "Donald's Double Trouble": Donald sees red when a Donald look-alike steals Daisy's affection. "Donald's Diary": Donald's dream of married life with a wife and kids is a laugh-filled nightmare!
The obvious complaint about the Disney Cartoon Classics series is that they offer only three cartoons per volume. Volume 7 focuses on "Donald & Daisy": (1) "Don Donald" (1937) finds the irascible duck riding a donkey over to visit his girl friend, senorita Donna (do not worry, it is still Daisy), and predictable havoc ensuing. Don Donald trades the donkey in for a hot little sports car, but that only makes things worse (2) "Donald's Double Trouble" (1946) finds Donald trying to make up with Daisy after a fit by hiring a gentlemanly look alike to make amends. This only sounds like a good idea; and (3) "Donald's Dairy" (1954), the best of the bunch, as Donald finds out what happens when he married Daisy and tries to live happily ever after. It is not that Donald and Daisy are star-crossed lovers, but it sure might seem that way after watching these three cartoons which span almost two decades in the long running relationship. Worth a couple of bucks, but not much more given the total running time of 23 minutes. |
Donald in Mathmagic Land (1959) Format: VHS |
Viewers of all ages will treasure this magical collection of Disney animated storytelling at its very best! In this highly acclaimed, award-winning film, a curious Donald Duck ventures into a mystical world of fantasy. Mathmagic Land is his destination -- a wondrous land of discovery where trees have square roots and rivers are brimming with numbers! During his journey, Donald discovers that you can have mirth with math, fun with fractions, and laughs with logic in this fascinating milestone in Disney's animation legacy.
Product Description from Manufacturer As a Middle School math teacher, I have found "Donald in Mathmagic Land" to be a very useful tool in introducing middle school students to the master egghead, Phythagoreas. I have shown this video in class every year for the past 5 years. The students find it to be very informative as well as entertaining. You know you have a hit on your hands when a 12 or 13 year old tells you a math video is COOL! I remember seeing this video when I was 8 years old, it made a huge impact on me. Perhaps it was the moment when I realized it was OK to be a math nerd. Donald travels through a surreal journey where everyday examples of math, which kids can relate to, come alive in the way only Disney animation can make them. The magic of angles is explained while donald gets "snookered" in a pool game; eights and twelves dance to the mystery of chords and notes, and the ultimate mystery of the secret geometers of Greece places fives and tens on a pedestal. I have been looking for this video for years and still can't find one in print, but would heartily recommend it for curious young and old thinkers. Way to go Disney! |

Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas Format: DVD or VHS |
Donald Duck's nephews learn why holidays come once a year, Goofy and son discover the spirit of Santa, and Mickey and Minnie reenact a classic tale of giving in this all-new holiday offering. Kelsey Grammer (TV's Frasier) narrates as Donald hosts Christmas at his house, complete with an egg and pancake breakfast, a sled for each duckling in the closet, and Daisy under the mistletoe. But the celebration gets old fast when the boys' wish for Christmas every day comes true. Next up, Goofy's son wonders whether there is a Santa after the villainous Pete tells him there's not and he catches Dad impersonating the portly gift-giver. Goofy demonstrates the spirit of giving by taking a meal and presents to less-fortunate neighbors, and many Goofy-style mishaps later, father and son have a surprise visitor. In the third story, the mouse lovebirds give an updated spin to O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," with Minnie having the heirloom watch with no chain and Mickey a harmonica with no case. This trio of Christmas stories adds up to an hour of heartfelt fun, capped off by the gang singing "Jingle Bells." Perfect holiday cheer for those 4 and up.

Saludos Amigos (1943) Available Formats: |
The first of two features Walt Disney made at the behest of the Office of Inter-American Affairs, Saludos Amigos consists of four cartoons linked by live-action travel footage. The very funny "Lake Titicaca" finds Donald Duck high in the Bolivian Andes, struggling with a recalcitrant llama. "Pedro," the story of a little airplane replacing his father on a mail run across the Andes, is a variation on "The Little Engine That Could." "El Gaucho Goofy" continues the popular "How To" cartoon series that juxtaposes a deadpan narration with increasing physical mayhem. Here, Goofy demonstrates Pampas-style riding and the use of the bola. The jaunty parrot Jose Carioca makes his debut in "Aquarela do Brasil." Although largely eclipsed by the wilder The Three Caballeros (1944), Saludos Amigos retains its charm. Included in the supplemental material is South of the Border with Disney, which chronicles the Good Will Tour Walt and a group of his artists made in 1941. The 16mm footage has darkened, but this featurette offers rare glimpses of some of these artists at work, including Frank Thomas, Norm Ferguson, and Mary Blair, whose stylized drawings set the look for much of Saludos Amigos and Caballeros.

The Three Caballeros (1945) Available Formats: |
As a Disney oddity, they don't get much odder than Three Caballeros. Donald Duck receives a birthday package from South America, and the film proceeds to unravel like some peyote-induced hallucination. It starts out reminiscent of other Disney films, where shorts are cobbled together, such as Make Mine Music or Fun and Fancy Free. The film has vignettes such as "The Cold-Blooded Penguin" and "The Flying Guachito." After them it careens straight into part-travelogue, part-stream-of-consciousness animation. Not helping out much are Donald's "friends," Joe Carioca (a parrot) and Panchito (a rooster). They spend most of the rest of the film watching Donald chase skirt. That's right, Donald Duck is a wolf in this movie, and he chases every live-action señorita who bustles across the screen. Although some will say otherwise, Caballeros is for die-hard Disney, Donald, or psychedelia fans only.

Melody Time (1948) Available Formats: |
In the grand tradition of Disney's greatest musical classics such as Fantasia, Melody Time features seven classic stories, each enhanced with high-spirited music and unforgettable characters! Donald Duck -- an all-time Disney favorite -- puts on a display of jazzy antics as the star of "Blame It On The Samba." Music becomes a real adventure for a busy bumble bee in "Bumble Boogie." From the mischievous young tugboat in "Little Toot," to the heroes of legend and myth in "Johnny Appleseed" and "Pecos Bill," this feast for the eyes and ears entertains with wit and charm. A timeless addition to your video collection, Melody Time is a delightful Disney classic with something for everyone in your family!
This is another collection of Disney shorts set to music, but this time the formula works. That's predicated on the inherent strength of the individual pieces and almost all of them come through. Surprisingly, two American folk heroes, Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, are the stars of this show, with rousty little tunes, humor, and compelling linear story lines (a rarity in most of these shorts). Even the shorts that are weak in one area, thematically or musically, make up for it in another. There's very little of the Disney animators attempting to be 1940s modern, thank goodness, and there's a sterling quality in the depth of the art work. A definite plus to an animation (or Disney) collection. |
