Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color (1937) Format: DVD	During the mid-'30s, Mickey Mouse's fans ranged from the more than one million children who were members of the Mickey Mouse Club to Franklin Roosevelt, Mary Pickford, and the Nizam of Hyderabad; theater marquees announced "A Mickey Mouse Cartoon" with the feature titles. These wonderful shorts, many of which have never been released to the home market, remind viewers just how charming Mickey was before his popularity and role as a corporate symbol restricted his behavior. In these cartoons Mickey's personality was boyish, appealing, and slightly mischievous. The superb animation emphasizes that impish appeal. When Mickey dances with a deck of cards in "Thru the Mirror," he displays a stylish grace Fred Astaire might envy; in "Brave Little Tailor," his expressions and body language reveal his thoughts as he outwits Willie the Giant. It's virtually impossible to watch him without smiling. These shorts overflow with color and motion, and their lavish visuals pack an increased impact in an era of minimal television animation. Disney arranged to screen "Skeleton Dance" at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles, where it received an enthusiastic response, and the series took off. Seven "Silly Symphonies" won Academy Awards, beginning with "Flowers and Trees." Disney used these musically themed shorts to train young artists and test new styles, effects, and technologies: every film represented an innovation of some sort. In "Three Little Pigs," characters who looked alike demonstrated different personalities through the way they moved. "The Old Mill" showcased the newly invented Multiplane camera. The Sugar Cookie Girl in "Cookie Carnival" was one of several female characters the artists created while learning to animate a believable heroine for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The well-chosen selections in this set demonstrate how quickly Disney advanced the art of animation during the '30s. Only eight years separate the crude black-and-white version of "The Ugly Duckling" (1931) from the moving Technicolor Oscar-winner of 1939. Over 60 years later, these films have lost none of their charm. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Available Formats: DVD and VHS	This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. The shorts were made in Disney's prime, a year before Cinderella, and the look is wondrous. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example. American Legends (2002) Available Formats: DVD and VHS	American history and pioneer mythology blur in this collection of animated Disney shorts hosted by James Earl Jones. From Disney's Golden Age come the marvelous Johnny Appleseed (1948), a fanciful, folksy, story-song tale of the real-life planter who seeded the Midwest, and The Brave Engineer (1950), a screwball version of "The Ballad of Casey Jones." If you get this video and have very young kids, sit with them for the first 4-5 times the video is played and explain to them that it is just a cartoon or make-believe. Willie the Operatic Whale Available Format: VHS	This is one of Disney's cutest shorts - the tragic story of a whale who can sing grand opera. Nelson Eddy does all the voices, and the result is a true Disney delight. Both of my daughters have loved this story and the two others accompanying it: Ferdinand the Bull and Lambert the Sheepish Lion, to the point of watching the video many times over the years. Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947) Available Formats: VHS and VHS Dubbed in Spanish	"Mickey and the Beanstalk" is one of those rare Disney shorts that has the feel and look of one of the studio's feature length animated works, mainly because it was originally part of the 1947 grab-bag feature "Fun and Fancy Free." Donald and Goofy get as much screen time as Mickey in this amusing revision of the tale of Jack. The best sequence is when the magic beanstalk starts growing at night and the animators also do a nice job of making the giant look, uh, gigantic! Mickey's Christmas Carol (1997 Release) Available Format: VHS	Despite being released in 1983 this lovely little animated Christmas story has the real mark of the late great Walt Disney on it. It has a slightly old fashioned look about it which is just right and harks back to all the outstanding work done at the Disney Studios during its golden age under Walt Disney. "Mickey's Christmas Carol" tells pure and simple the story of Charles Dickens immortal tale "A Christmas Carol" with all the well known Disney characters being superbly cast in the main roles of the story. Despite there being countless versions of this classic story this adaption is excellent and ideal family entertainment. Scrooge McDuck, always one of my favourite Disney characters takes centre stage here as , you guessed it Ebenezer Scrooge. As befitting to Scrooge his character starts out as mean, uncaring, and cold before the necessary reformation at the conclusion. His voice is provided by Disney veteran Alan Young. Mickey Mouse plays the sympathetic role of the down trodden Bob Cratchit and Goofy makes a most memorable, accident prone Jacob Marley, Scrooge's former coworker. Playing the three spirits who make the visit to Scrooge on Christmas Eve are Willie the Giant, Jiminy Cricket and Pete. The beautiful animation for the Christmas settings is unsurpassed with the snow covered town, gaslighted streets, Christmas Decorations and Victorian costumes of the characters and it just seems that the well known personalities of the various animated characters match perfectly with their Dicken's counterparts. I'm frankly surprised that this wonderful story had never been adapted by Walt Disney before, what with all the potential that it holds. As an alternative to all the live action versions of this great classic story I feel "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is an excellent effort and still manages to get across the essential message that Charles Dickens was trying to make about forgiveness and love for one another. Put aside the thirty or so minutes this story takes to tell and it will definately instill the Christmas spirit in you. What's great about vintage Disney toons(and not just the one's on this tape), is that they're truly not just for kids. This particular video begins with "The Little Whirlwind", an inspired animated short in which Minnie Mouse makes a delicious-looking cake, which Mickey desperately wants to eat, but Minnie won't give it to him unless he earns it, so Mickey offers to clean up her yard, and I won't reveal what happens next! Here's Donald (1991) Format: VHS	Yes, there are classic Disney cartoons featuring Donald Duck on this video, but the problem is that there are just three of them running a grand total of 22 minutes. "Here's Donald!" is Volume 2 in the Dinsey Cartoon Classics series and here is what you get: (1) "Wide Open Spaces" (1947) finds cheapskate Donald unwilling to pay for a hotel room. So, instead, he spends the night out in the great outdoors dealing with an air mattress, a boulder, and other headaches; (2) "Crazy with the Heat" (1947) has Donald and Goofy stuck in the desert when their car breaks down. As they walk across the hot burning sand they start seeing things they are not really there (or are they?); and (3) "Donald's Ostrich" (1937), which was the third Donald Duck cartoon, find our hero having to deal with Hortense, the Ostrich, who tends to eat everything in sight, whether it is food or not. This cartoon was written by the great Carl Barks, who went out to write and draw the classic Scrooge McDuck comic book stories, so I have a special fondness for that particular cartoon. All three of these cartoons are more than decent example of the world's most irascible duck in action, but given how little is here you want to make sure you pick this one up for only a couple of bucks to get your money's worth. Tiny Toy Stories (1996) Format: VHS	Before Toy Story, there was Tin Toy (1988's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Short). John Lasseter and the creative geniuses at Pixar made landmark short films that paved the way for their feature-length films. This dandy collection contains their five shorts made between 1984 and 1989. The only throwaway is The Adventures of André & Wally B., the earliest short, barely two minutes long. The famous hopping lamp (now part of the company's logo) appears in Luxo Jr. and illustrates how Pixar's sense of humor is so crucial to its success. There is real personality here, as a "father" lamp is surprised by his "son." That essence comes to life in the Oscar-winning Tin Toy. This film about a baby playing with a wind-up doll is a blueprint for Toy Story as is Knickknack, a delightful and very funny short about a snowman who will do anything to get out of his snow globe.
