Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color (1937)

Format:
DVD
During the mid-'30s, Mickey Mouse's fans ranged from the more than one million children who were members of the Mickey Mouse Club to Franklin Roosevelt, Mary Pickford, and the Nizam of Hyderabad; theater marquees announced "A Mickey Mouse Cartoon" with the feature titles. These wonderful shorts, many of which have never been released to the home market, remind viewers just how charming Mickey was before his popularity and role as a corporate symbol restricted his behavior. In these cartoons Mickey's personality was boyish, appealing, and slightly mischievous. The superb animation emphasizes that impish appeal. When Mickey dances with a deck of cards in "Thru the Mirror," he displays a stylish grace Fred Astaire might envy; in "Brave Little Tailor," his expressions and body language reveal his thoughts as he outwits Willie the Giant. It's virtually impossible to watch him without smiling. These shorts overflow with color and motion, and their lavish visuals pack an increased impact in an era of minimal television animation. Only Walt Disney would spend the money to animate a full deck of cards, a band flying through the air in a tornado, or a clutch of semitransparent ghosts, and only his animators could make those characters live on the screen. The prints have been lovingly restored without pumping up the color too much: the nuances of the delicate watercolor backgrounds still come through. Parents, Disney buffs, and animation fans will want this superb collection in their home libraries.

LIMITED RELEASE DVD.

Available December 2003.

It was 1934 when the irascible Donald Duck came to life in a teeny bit of a part in "The Wise Little Hen" and proceeded to steal the show. From that point on nobody could hold him back, and the much loved cranky character went on to be the most prolific of Walt's "fabulous five." Now for the first time, you can enjoy the Donald in all of his solo starring shorts from "Donald And Pluto" in 1936 to "Chef Donald" in 1941. This volume also includes a loving tribute to the man who achieved immortality by inventing the voice of Donald Duck -- and performing as his alter ego for 50 years -- Clarence "Ducky" Nash. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come. .

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White

Format:
DVD
In these cartoons released between 1928 and 1935, Walt Disney created one of the icons of 20th-century culture. Disney's reputation was built on these early shorts, and the films shimmer with the energy of the young artists exploring the new medium of the sound cartoon. Watching the films in chronological order enables the viewer to see the remarkable progress Walt and his crew made in animation, storytelling, and acting in just seven years. The rambunctious, rubbery Mickey of "Plane Crazy" and "Steamboat Willie" quickly developed into the polished charmer of "Gulliver Mickey" and "Mickey's Orphans." More than 70 years after his debut, the black and white Mickey still displays the appeal that made him so popular during the '30s, when A Mickey Mouse Cartoon appeared on theater marquees with the feature titles, and his fans included Franklin Roosevelt, Mary Pickford, George V of England, the Nizam of Hyderabad--and the more than one million children who joined the first Mickey Mouse Club.

Although it's fun to look at the old sketches and pencil tests, the high point of the supplementary material is the discussion host Leonard Maltin conducts with Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, the last surviving members of the justly celebrated "Nine Old Men" of Disney animation. Thomas and Johnston were nearly 90 at the time of the interview, but their enthusiasm for their work, for Mickey, and for the man who made it all possible remains undimmed. (Unrated; suitable for all ages: cartoon violence)

Walt Disney Treasures - The Complete Goofy (1944)

Format:
DVD
With a gentle, childlike innocence, Goofy has delighted audiences for 70 years. For the first time ever, celebrate Walt Disney's lumbering, lovable, and eternally loyal everyman in this retrospective of his classic animated shorts and enjoy the heyday of one of the most popular characters in cartoon history. Unlike the rest of Disney's "mouse pack," Goofy didn't become a major movie star overnight. This compilation of shorts begins with the Goof's first starring role. The volume also includes animator Art Babbitt's original descriptive reference of all things Goofy, the original voice behind the Goof, Pinto Colvig, and an exclusive interview with the current voice of Goofy, Bill Farmer. You'll also have the opportunity to see theatrical posters and other memorabilia, a selection of story drawings, and background paintings. After all, it's the Goofy thing to do. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.

Product Description

In Stand By Me (1986), one of the boys asks, "If Mickey is a mouse and Donald is a duck, what's Goofy?" The answer: he's a dog. Originally named Dippy Dawg, the Goof, as the animators called him, made his debut as an obnoxious hayseed in "Mickey's Revue" (1932). This generous collection includes 46 of the 48 shorts that starred Goofy between 1939 and 1961 (but none of the great Mickey-Donald-Goofy films from the mid-'30s). The "How to Ride a Horse" sequence in The Reluctant Dragon (1941) set the pattern for many of these cartoons. An elegant narrator (artist John Ployardt) explains a sport that Goofy attempts to demonstrate. The character that animator Art Babbitt described in a 1935 lecture (quoted in the DVD bonus material) as an easygoing dimbulb gave way to an enthusiastic but spectacularly maladroit figure. One of the funniest entries in the series, "Hockey Homicide," contains several studio in-jokes: dueling stars Icebox Bertino and Fearless Ferguson, and referee Clean-Game Kinney are named for artists Al Bertino, Norm Ferguson, and director Jack Kinney.

During the '50s, Goofy was transformed into a genial suburban Everyman in such domestic sitcoms as "Fathers Are People," "Two Weeks Vacation," and "Father's Day Off." The animators reduced his floppy ears and buck teeth, improved his posture, and gave him a brisker walk. The best-known short from this period is "Motor Mania" (1950), a mildly didactic spoof of American behavior on the road that was shown in driver's education classes for decades.

Walt Disney Treasures - Silly Symphonies (1934)

Format:
DVD
In 1928, when Walt Disney's artists completed "The Skeleton Dance," the distributor of the Mickey Mouse shorts rejected the first "Silly Symphony" with a two-word telegram: "MORE MICE." Disney arranged to screen "Skeleton Dance" at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles, where it received an enthusiastic response, and the series took off. Seven "Silly Symphonies" won Academy Awards, beginning with "Flowers and Trees." Disney used these musically themed shorts to train young artists and test new styles, effects, and technologies: every film represented an innovation of some sort. In "Three Little Pigs," characters who looked alike demonstrated different personalities through the way they moved. "The Old Mill" showcased the newly invented Multiplane camera. The Sugar Cookie Girl in "Cookie Carnival" was one of several female characters the artists created while learning to animate a believable heroine for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The well-chosen selections in this set demonstrate how quickly Disney advanced the art of animation during the '30s. Only eight years separate the crude black-and-white version of "The Ugly Duckling" (1931) from the moving Technicolor Oscar-winner of 1939. Over 60 years later, these films have lost none of their charm. The jazz-dancing insects in "Woodland Café," the wonderfully animated caricature of Mae West in "Who Killed Cock Robin," and the instrument-characters in "Music Land" remain as delightful as ever. Leonard Maltin makes a genial host, and two hidden cartoons include Walt's introductions from the old Disneyland program.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

This 1949 Disney feature has never been available on video in its original form until now. The 68-minute film contains two shorts: The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. The shorts were made in Disney's prime, a year before Cinderella, and the look is wondrous. The exaggeration of Ichabod's skinny frame and his slumping horse is a glorious example.

American Legends (2002)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

American history and pioneer mythology blur in this collection of animated Disney shorts hosted by James Earl Jones. From Disney's Golden Age come the marvelous Johnny Appleseed (1948), a fanciful, folksy, story-song tale of the real-life planter who seeded the Midwest, and The Brave Engineer (1950), a screwball version of "The Ballad of Casey Jones." Paul Bunyan (1958) is pure tall tale turned energetic American myth: the giant lumberjack is a homespun Zeus in flannel and logger boots creating the mountains and valleys of the American West with his big, blue ox, Babe. Joining these classics is Disney's stylized new take on the folk song John Henry (2000), narrated by Alfre Woodard. The sketchy, roughed-up style echoes Jacob Lawrence in moments, and the rich soundtrack soars with spiritual-influenced music. Like the best of Disney, these spirited folk tales speak to both children and adults.

Product Description from Manufacturer

Ben and Me is the fun-filled story of Benjamin Franklin's friendship with a little mouse named Amos. In the 1700's, Amos the mouse set out to make his way in early America. He soon found himself at the home of Benjamin Franklin, a young, unsuccessful printer and bookbinder. Seeing an opportunity to help Ben out and find a place for himself, Amos supplies Ben with helpful ideas to improve his life and business. Together they work on Ben's paper, and Amos invents the Franklin stove and bifocals. Soon, thanks to Amos, Ben is the successful and well respected publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette, and he is fast becoming one of the most popular men in America. But Ben and Amos have a falling out one day, when Ben's experiments with electricity prove to be hazardous to Amos's health one time too many. The two spend several years apart, until war is in the air and America is ready to separate from its mother country of England. Ben goes to Amos for help, wanting his little friend to return home with him and resume their partnership, but Amos is still bitter after all these years. Amos draws up a contract that Ben must agree to if they are to be friends again, a contract that reads remarkably similarly to our own Declaration of Independence!

Ben and Me is a wonderful Disney Classic featurette about Ben Franklin and America's struggle for Independence. It is definitely a must watch around the 4th of July, and a must have for any fan of Ben Franklin, the American Revolution, or Disney Animation in general! I'm thrilled to have it in my video collection! Pick your copy up before it's gone!

The Three Little Pigs

Available Format:
VHS

Presenting Disney Favorite Stories ... a collection of timeless tales told through captivating music, brilliant animation, and colorful Disney characters! Who's afraid of the big, bad wolf? Not the Three Little Pigs! This Academy Award(R)-winning classic tells the story of two playful little pigs and their very hard-working and wiser brother. When a very hungry wolf huffs and puffs their houses away, it's up to big brother pig to save the day! Disney's retelling of the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" (THE BIG BAD WOLF) and the "Three Little Wolves" also included!

Product Description from Manufacturer

As an adult I enjoyed watching this video with my three-year-old daughter; she loves to watch this video over and over and laugh and giggle. We both found many parts of the video funny and laughed together, however some parts frightened her as there is a bit too much violence at the end of the video. In some cases I feel kids can get "ideas" put into their heads from watching the video; there is one part where the kid wolves are chasing the pigs with meat knives. If you get this video and have very young kids, sit with them for the first 4-5 times the video is played and explain to them that it is just a cartoon or make-believe.

Willie the Operatic Whale

Available Format:
VHS

This is one of Disney's cutest shorts - the tragic story of a whale who can sing grand opera. Nelson Eddy does all the voices, and the result is a true Disney delight. Both of my daughters have loved this story and the two others accompanying it: Ferdinand the Bull and Lambert the Sheepish Lion, to the point of watching the video many times over the years. All three shorts are simply superb.

Description from Amazon.com Customer Review

Willie the Operatic Whale is the thoroughly charming story of a melodious mammal who is destined to be the biggest thing yet to hit the Met! Plus, don't miss two fun bonus titles! First, it's the Academy Award®-winning short, Ferdinand the Bull. He's a lover, not a fighter, but when push comes to shove, Ferdinand's got a bullish side too! Then, get ready for a double dose of animal courage in Lambert, The Sheepish Lion, when Lambert, a pitiful outcast, becomes a beloved hero, proving that miracles really do happen!

Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947)

Available Formats: VHS and VHS Dubbed in Spanish
"Mickey and the Beanstalk" is one of those rare Disney shorts that has the feel and look of one of the studio's feature length animated works, mainly because it was originally part of the 1947 grab-bag feature "Fun and Fancy Free." Donald and Goofy get as much screen time as Mickey in this amusing revision of the tale of Jack. The best sequence is when the magic beanstalk starts growing at night and the animators also do a nice job of making the giant look, uh, gigantic! One of the best Disney "mini-classics," and a treat for parents as well as kids.

Mickey's Christmas Carol

(1997 Release)

Available Format:
VHS

Despite being released in 1983 this lovely little animated Christmas story has the real mark of the late great Walt Disney on it. It has a slightly old fashioned look about it which is just right and harks back to all the outstanding work done at the Disney Studios during its golden age under Walt Disney.

"Mickey's Christmas Carol" tells pure and simple the story of Charles Dickens immortal tale "A Christmas Carol" with all the well known Disney characters being superbly cast in the main roles of the story. Despite there being countless versions of this classic story this adaption is excellent and ideal family entertainment. Scrooge McDuck, always one of my favourite Disney characters takes centre stage here as , you guessed it Ebenezer Scrooge. As befitting to Scrooge his character starts out as mean, uncaring, and cold before the necessary reformation at the conclusion. His voice is provided by Disney veteran Alan Young. Mickey Mouse plays the sympathetic role of the down trodden Bob Cratchit and Goofy makes a most memorable, accident prone Jacob Marley, Scrooge's former coworker. Playing the three spirits who make the visit to Scrooge on Christmas Eve are Willie the Giant, Jiminy Cricket and Pete.

The beautiful animation for the Christmas settings is unsurpassed with the snow covered town, gaslighted streets, Christmas Decorations and Victorian costumes of the characters and it just seems that the well known personalities of the various animated characters match perfectly with their Dicken's counterparts. I'm frankly surprised that this wonderful story had never been adapted by Walt Disney before, what with all the potential that it holds.

As an alternative to all the live action versions of this great classic story I feel "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is an excellent effort and still manages to get across the essential message that Charles Dickens was trying to make about forgiveness and love for one another. Put aside the thirty or so minutes this story takes to tell and it will definately instill the Christmas spirit in you. As a lover of fine animation with lovable characters, it's a particular favourite of mine and I hope you too will find a place for it in your home.

Peter & The Wolf

Available Format:
VHS

Disney brings a magical, musical classic to life! Peter, a precocious young boy, goes hunting despite his grandfather's warning. He joins forces with some new animal friends, who help him match wits against a hungry wolf! Includes the musical shorts "Music Land" and "Symphony Hour."

Product Description from Manufacturer

This is one of the most endearing and enduring Disney cartoons ever! Serge Prokofieff's timeless music orchestrates the Russian folk tale of little Peter and his "hunting party" who go off to trap the big bad wolf. Sterling Holloway's voice is perfect as narrator. Each character in the tale has his/her own theme played by a different orchestral instrument - teaching the viewer to distinguish sounds and themes while enjoying the show. Warning: As a child (many, many years ago) I found Sonia the Duck's encounter with the snapping, snarling, hungry Wolf much scarier and distressing than Oz's Wicked Witch of the West and her Flying Monkeys - so you might want to pre-view this before showing it to a very young child.

Also included on the video are the cute and funny "Silly Symphony" a non-verbal lesson in international harmony and "Music Land" featuring favorite Disney cartoon characters.

If you like this video, I recommend you also try the CD Heigh-Ho! Mozart.

Format:

A poor young boy braves the big city to sell the family donkey, Small One. But there doesn't seem to be anyone who can offer a warm home and tender care to the beloved beast and the boy becomes thoroughly disheartened. When a gentle stranger appears, in need of a very special animal for a very special journey, a bright stars shines reassuringly in the December sky. The Small One is an animated Christmas treasure and a touching, inspiring tale for all ages!

Product Description from Manufacturer

This is a wonderful short story from Disney that gives a new perspective to the Nativity story - from the viewpoint of the little donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem, and the boy who owned him. The songs are lovely to listen to, especially 'Small One' and 'Friendly Face'. There is a charm and warmth in this tale that I find is lacking in many of the animations that Disney are producing of late.

The Reluctant Dragon (1941)

Available Format:
VHS

Ever wanted to go behind the scenes at The Walt Disney Studios to see how such classics as DUMBO, BAMBI, and others were created? Now you have a studio pass to step back in time! Our tour guide is on his way to see Walt Disney to present a movie idea called The Reluctant Dragon. As he stumbles through the maze of the backlot, we discover how a cartoon is created through art, sound, and color. Along the way, we meet Donald, Pluto, Goofy, and other Disney favorites, witness the birth of "Baby Weems," a brilliantly funny animated work-in-progress, and enjoy the complete animated short The Reluctant Dragon.

Product Description from Manufacturer

Having seen this feature in the movies when I was a child, I always remembered the delightful dragon and his fear of violence, and the fierce loyalty of the boy. Not only is the story theme a bit novel, and also a bit silly, about the dragon being forced to fight when he did not want to, it is resolved so delightfully that children will remember it well as I. I wish it would be available as children are always so curious about Dragons and this film has no real violence in it, except the "pretend" fight between the knight and the dragon. We need this happy film.

Description from Amazon.com Customer Review

I used to enjoy watching this when I was a kid (and before the days of videotape). I've been waiting for Disney to re-issue the tape version so I can get it for my kids. In a nutshell, it's about a dragon who does not particularly enjoy terrorizing peasants, a knight who does not particularly enjoy fighting dragons, and -- of course -- the charming little boy who tries to keep them from hurting each other.

When I was very young, my parents bought me this video, and I still watch it sometimes today. What's great about vintage Disney toons(and not just the one's on this tape), is that they're truly not just for kids. This particular video begins with "The Little Whirlwind", an inspired animated short in which Minnie Mouse makes a delicious-looking cake, which Mickey desperately wants to eat, but Minnie won't give it to him unless he earns it, so Mickey offers to clean up her yard, and I won't reveal what happens next! The other cartoons, "Hawaiian Holiday" and "The Brave Little Tailor" are very entertaining also.

Here's Donald (1991)

Format: VHS
Yes, there are classic Disney cartoons featuring Donald Duck on this video, but the problem is that there are just three of them running a grand total of 22 minutes. "Here's Donald!" is Volume 2 in the Dinsey Cartoon Classics series and here is what you get: (1) "Wide Open Spaces" (1947) finds cheapskate Donald unwilling to pay for a hotel room. So, instead, he spends the night out in the great outdoors dealing with an air mattress, a boulder, and other headaches; (2) "Crazy with the Heat" (1947) has Donald and Goofy stuck in the desert when their car breaks down. As they walk across the hot burning sand they start seeing things they are not really there (or are they?); and (3) "Donald's Ostrich" (1937), which was the third Donald Duck cartoon, find our hero having to deal with Hortense, the Ostrich, who tends to eat everything in sight, whether it is food or not. This cartoon was written by the great Carl Barks, who went out to write and draw the classic Scrooge McDuck comic book stories, so I have a special fondness for that particular cartoon. All three of these cartoons are more than decent example of the world's most irascible duck in action, but given how little is here you want to make sure you pick this one up for only a couple of bucks to get your money's worth.

Starring Donald & Daisy (1991)

Format: VHS
A wondrous collection of cartoon masterpieces from Disney. Each volume in this fabulous series is filled with the kind of joy and laughter that have made these cartoons timeless. Yours to enjoy now ... and forever. Donald's fiery "wisequacks" are often tempered by his one true love: Daisy Duck. Join Donald and Daisy in these three hilarious cartoons. "Don Donald": Daisy Duck makes her screen debut as Donna Duck, a pretty Spanish senorita who sets Donald's heart a-flutter! "Donald's Double Trouble": Donald sees red when a Donald look-alike steals Daisy's affection. "Donald's Diary": Donald's dream of married life with a wife and kids is a laugh-filled nightmare!

Product Description from Manufacturer

The obvious complaint about the Disney Cartoon Classics series is that they offer only three cartoons per volume. Volume 7 focuses on "Donald & Daisy": (1) "Don Donald" (1937) finds the irascible duck riding a donkey over to visit his girl friend, senorita Donna (do not worry, it is still Daisy), and predictable havoc ensuing. Don Donald trades the donkey in for a hot little sports car, but that only makes things worse (2) "Donald's Double Trouble" (1946) finds Donald trying to make up with Daisy after a fit by hiring a gentlemanly look alike to make amends. This only sounds like a good idea; and (3) "Donald's Dairy" (1954), the best of the bunch, as Donald finds out what happens when he married Daisy and tries to live happily ever after. It is not that Donald and Daisy are star-crossed lovers, but it sure might seem that way after watching these three cartoons which span almost two decades in the long running relationship. Worth a couple of bucks, but not much more given the total running time of 23 minutes.

Viewers of all ages will treasure this magical collection of Disney animated storytelling at its very best! In this highly acclaimed, award-winning film, a curious Donald Duck ventures into a mystical world of fantasy. Mathmagic Land is his destination -- a wondrous land of discovery where trees have square roots and rivers are brimming with numbers! During his journey, Donald discovers that you can have mirth with math, fun with fractions, and laughs with logic in this fascinating milestone in Disney's animation legacy.

Product Description from Manufacturer

As a Middle School math teacher, I have found "Donald in Mathmagic Land" to be a very useful tool in introducing middle school students to the master egghead, Phythagoreas. I have shown this video in class every year for the past 5 years. The students find it to be very informative as well as entertaining. You know you have a hit on your hands when a 12 or 13 year old tells you a math video is COOL!

Description from Amazon.com Customer Review

I remember seeing this video when I was 8 years old, it made a huge impact on me. Perhaps it was the moment when I realized it was OK to be a math nerd. Donald travels through a surreal journey where everyday examples of math, which kids can relate to, come alive in the way only Disney animation can make them. The magic of angles is explained while donald gets "snookered" in a pool game; eights and twelves dance to the mystery of chords and notes, and the ultimate mystery of the secret geometers of Greece places fives and tens on a pedestal. I have been looking for this video for years and still can't find one in print, but would heartily recommend it for curious young and old thinkers. Way to go Disney!

Tiny Toy Stories (1996)

Format: VHS
Before Toy Story, there was Tin Toy (1988's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Short). John Lasseter and the creative geniuses at Pixar made landmark short films that paved the way for their feature-length films. This dandy collection contains their five shorts made between 1984 and 1989. The only throwaway is The Adventures of André & Wally B., the earliest short, barely two minutes long. The famous hopping lamp (now part of the company's logo) appears in Luxo Jr. and illustrates how Pixar's sense of humor is so crucial to its success. There is real personality here, as a "father" lamp is surprised by his "son." That essence comes to life in the Oscar-winning Tin Toy. This film about a baby playing with a wind-up doll is a blueprint for Toy Story as is Knickknack, a delightful and very funny short about a snowman who will do anything to get out of his snow globe. An essential for any fan of computer animation.
